Noel Wells is a young curate in the sleepy village of Saltmarsh. His life mostly passes in helping the Reverend Bedivere Coutts with his sermons, organising the August Bank Holiday fete and dancing with Daphne to the gramophone in the vicarage study. Then one day Mrs Coutts, forever outraged at the villagers' licentious behaviour, discovers that her unmarried housemaid is pregnant. Trouble begins.

Noel knows just the person to help: Mrs Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, the screeching, beady-eyed, pterodactyl-like guest at the Manor House. 'So this,' Noel thinks to himself, 'is a psycho-analyst,' as Mrs Bradley, playing Holmes to his willing but imbecile Watson, pinches his cheek with her claws and sets out on her unnervingly unorthodox investigation. Bringing to bear all her wits - and wit - she tackles with relish a smuggler, the village lunatic, a missing corpse, a public pillorying, an exhumation, and of course a murderer.
