Guide to Book Conditions

We only sell used books here at Firecrackle (for now), so the condition of every book is included in its listing, along with photos to try and accurately show the condition.

To try and be as consistent as possible, I use the guidelines set out by AbeBooks to define the condition of a book. I've listed all the conditions and definitions below, as AbeBooks have them, but if you have any questions about a book, please don't hesitate to email me:

As New

The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. This could be the description for a book that has been lost in a warehouse for years, never shelved, thumbed or even opened yet may still be some years old.

Fine

The book approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp. The book may have been opened and read, but there are no defects to the book, jacket or pages.

Very Good

The book shows some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either binding or paper. Any defects will be listed in the description.

Good

The book is an average, used worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects will be listed in the description.

Fair

The book is worn, has complete text pages, but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. If this is the case, it will be noted. The binding, jacket, etc., may also be worn. Any defects will be listed in the description.

Poor

The book is sufficiently worn. Any missing pages will be noted. The book may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.
