This charming quarto consists of twelve openings, one for each month of the year. At each 'spread', there is a full colour picture by two famous artists. Set alongside and opposite the picture is an outline diagram and descriptive text by a distinguished writer and naturalist. There is added an account of the plants mentioned with their common and some local names.

This collaboration, and this idea, have produced something unusual: an efficient guide-book and a volume that is a pleasure to read and look upon, for each picture is a landscape. In an ingenious and simple way it answers the wayfarer's questions as to the identity , habitat, lore, and human association of the trees and plants to be found each month in our lnes, fields and woods.
