At a writer's convention in a London hotel, four old friends meet and embark on a strange project. Bored by the conference, Don Thomas, Sergei Rozanov, Victor Surkov and Masha Barash meet in each other's rooms with a tape recorder to improvise stories that will make a novel called Lying Together.

Like Russian dolls, the episodes they create unfold, each with another inside it, each blending fact and fiction, blurring the distinctions between author and character.

The narrative that evolves is erotic, darkly comic and richly textured. Surkov claims to have seduced Raisa Gorbachev and enjoyed a petting session with Margaret Thatcher; Masha spends her afternoons in bed with a violent female Chilean writer; a masochistic servant-girl corresponds with the celebrated sex-psychologist Krafft-Ebing; a figure from Lapp folklore appears and even Freud himself appears to voice an opinion.
